Migration Footprints · From Central China to Australia

China is one of the world’s four ancient civilizations, with a brilliant history spanning over five thousand years. The Yellow River, the “Mother River” of the Chinese nation, nurtured countless diligent and wise sons and daughters of China.

In the spring of 2025, I was invited to visit Wuhan, and at the Hubei Provincial Museum, I came across a striking title:

“Huguang Filling Sichuan, Jiangxi Filling Guangdong.”

Delving deeper into this history, I learned that during the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, wars devastated central China, causing drastic population decline. The imperial court organized large-scale migrations to Huguang (modern Hunan and Hubei) and Sichuan. At the same time, people from Jiangxi moved into Guangdong, reshaping the cultural and economic landscape of southern China.

Some of these migrants who moved from central China and Jiangxi to Guangdong later followed even broader routes, crossing the seas to Southeast Asia and eventually arriving in Australia.

From Xiangshan to the Southern Hemisphere – The Journey of Louie Yiyou

Amid this century-spanning migration history, one name stands out — Louie Yiyou.

A native of Xiangshan (today’s Zhongshan) in Guangdong, he carried the dream of a new life. In 1896, he boarded a ship bound for the Southern Hemisphere and arrived in Australia, beginning a remarkable new chapter of his journey.

Like countless Chinese migrants, Louie Yiyou endured hardship and persevered, working in goldfields, farms, and cities, gradually establishing a livelihood in Australia. Yet he remained connected to his homeland, contributing to local development and supporting national rejuvenation. His story reflects the continuation and expansion of China’s internal migrations into overseas migration history.

A Cultural Legacy Across Mountains and Seas

From the Yellow River basin to Jiangxi and Huguang, from Xiangshan in Guangdong to Australia,

this thousand-year migration route reshaped China’s regional landscape and extended the cultural roots of China to the wider world.

Through this history, the Australian Chinese History Museum reveals that

every Chinese migrant who crossed mountains and seas is a bearer of culture, resilience, and legacy.
